Estimate an age-grade percentage using a reference standard
Age grading compares a performance with a reference standard for a particular age category, sex category and distance. This tool calculates standard time divided by your time as a percentage, so you must supply the correct published standard time for your category and event distance. It does not automatically look up official tables and cannot verify your chosen benchmark.
Age Grade / Performance Benchmark Calculator
Compare a performance against a benchmark time you choose. This transparent percentage comparison is not an official age-grade calculation.
Why this calculator is useful
Compare your time with a reference you provide, ensuring both times refer to the same distance and event type.
How to use it
- Enter a recent, representative result or your planned race details, using the units shown beside each field.
- Select Calculate and review the result, including the assumptions and limitations shown.
- Use the result as a planning aid, compare it with how you feel, and recalculate when your inputs change.
Results are estimates, not guarantees. Fitness, recovery, weather, terrain, elevation and course conditions can all change the outcome.

Frequently asked questions
Is this an official age-grade score?
No. It compares your time with a reference time you enter. Official age grading uses published standards and the appropriate age, sex category and event distance.
How should I choose a benchmark?
Choose a clearly defined reference for the same distance and comparable course conditions. Explain the source and date if you share the comparison.
Can I compare different race distances?
Only if the benchmark time is for the same distance and event type. A time over 5K should not be directly compared with a marathon benchmark.
How to interpret the result
A higher percentage means your performance is closer to or faster than the reference time you entered. Make sure both times use the same distance and comparable event conditions. For general pacing, use the Training Pace Calculator and Running Calculators hub.
FAQs
Does this look up official age-grade standards?
No. You need to enter the appropriate reference time from a reliable published age-grading table.
Can I use a benchmark for a different distance?
No. Your performance and the reference time must be for the same distance.
